Today is October 9 and Jay and I are still in Nashville for our daughter’s birthday. But the tour group has a BUSY day.  First stop is the Picquette Plant facility, the original ford factory built in 1904 and the birthplace of the Model T.  After the tour, they had a box lunch at the … Continue reading Detroit vs Nashville…

Jay and I are leaving the tour for a couple of days to celebrate our daughter’s birthday in Nashville, so the group is reporting highlights of these couple of days in the Detroit area for the blog. (Most of the shots below are by Terri Padgett.) We said goodbye to the group as they boarded … Continue reading First Full Day in Detroit Area

More Than Just Cars

October 8, 2019Pat Burbank 1 Comment

Our first stop of the day was at the private Stahl’s Automotive Museum in Chesterfield, MI.  Here are our cars in the parking lot and just a few cars inside the museum. Besides all kinds of automotive memorabilia, there was a fabulous collection of player pianos, organs, and other mechanical instruments. And our tour accordionist … Continue reading More Than Just Cars

A Lighthouse, Pretzels, and German Dinner

October 8, 2019Pat Burbank Leave a comment

Today was a busy day…  We started out with a 70 mile drive to Point Aux Barques Lighthouse in Port Hope, MI. The museum here usually closes on October 1st, but they were so excited about our group of 1928-1931 Model A Fords that the volunteers came in just for us! They even fed us … Continue reading A Lighthouse, Pretzels, and German Dinner

Farewell, Mackinac

October 6, 2019Pat Burbank Leave a comment

On Saturday, we caught an early ferry back to the mainland. Farewell, Mackinac: We had a leisurely drive south toward Bay City, MI. As we drove further south, our fall colors began to change.  We had almost no reds, fewer yellows and more greens. We accidentally found 40 Mile Lighthouse which had a wonderful museum … Continue reading Farewell, Mackinac

Let’s review for a moment…  Our Great Lakes Model A Tour started on Tuesday, Sept. 24th, in Milwaukee, which is on the western shore of Lake Michigan (LAKE #1).  After a couple of days, we drove basically northward to Ashland, WI, which is on the southern shore of Lake Superior (LAKE #2).  Then we drove … Continue reading A Step Back in Time

We Visit Ghosts of the Shipwreck Coast

October 3, 2019Pat Burbank Leave a comment

Today we drove the remainder of the southern coast of Lake Superior. It was mostly overcast this morning, but as you can see below, when the sun came out, the trees really lit up! The morning drive was over 100 miles, but we managed to make time to visit Tahquamenon Falls: We arrived at the … Continue reading We Visit Ghosts of the Shipwreck Coast

We Miss Another Cruise…

Day 8 (October 1, 2019) found us with an “easy” drive along the south shore of Lake Superior to our evening at Munising, MI. Here are a few shots from the day: We were scheduled for a sunset cruise to see the colorful sandstone cliffs called Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.  Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate … Continue reading We Miss Another Cruise…

Rained Out in the UP (Upper Peninsula)

October 3, 2019Pat Burbank 3 Comments

Day 7 of the Model A Tour of the Great Lakes started early as we left our hotel and prepared to drive to Bayfield, WI, for a 3-hour narrated boat cruise of Lake Superior.  However, we stopped for breakfast half way there and learned that the cruise had been cancelled.  We were disappointed, but in … Continue reading Rained Out in the UP (Upper Peninsula)

We Reach Lake Superior

October 1, 2019Pat Burbank 2 Comments

Today’s drive northward took us along scenic highways and we saw more color and we drove toward Ashland, WI. It was drizzly today, but we stopped at Copper Falls for a pleasant hike through this Wisconsin State Park. No, there are no copper mines here.  The Bad River leading to Copper Falls gets its copper … Continue reading We Reach Lake Superior

About the Model A Ford

The Ford Model A was in production from 1928 - 1931. It was the second huge success for the Ford Motor Company, the Ford Model T being its first.

The 1928 release of the Model A introduced all new models, colors and features as opposed to the black only Model T. These features included a three speed sliding gear transmission 40 HP engine, four wheel brake system and hydraulic shock absorbers. The original prices ran from around $500 to $1200 dollars. Sales were very strong but as with all companies, the Depression had a major impact. For the four years of production Ford produced over 4 million Model A's.

The Model A was replaced in 1932 with the Model B and Model 18 which had Ford's new V-8 engine.

Today it is estimated that there are over 250,000 Model A's still in use today.
